Digging a Vegetarian Diet

Plant-Based Eating Can Reap Rewards

Vegetarians miss out on lots of foods. No grilled burgers or franks at picnics. No holiday turkey or fries cooked in animal fat. Strict vegetarians may even forego honey made by bees. But vegetarians also tend to miss out on major health problems that plague many Americans. They generally live longer than the rest of us, and they’re more likely to bypass heart-related and other ailments.
The fact is, eating a more plant-based diet can boost your health, whether you’re a vegetarian or not.
What is it about the vegetarian lifestyle that can protect your health? And are there risks to being vegetarian? NIH-funded researchers are looking for answers. They’re exploring the many ways that diet and other factors affect our health.
Vegetarian meals focus on fruits and vegetables, dried beans, whole grains, seeds and nuts. By some estimates, about 2% of the U.S. adult population follows this type of diet.
People have many reasons for becoming vegetarians. Some want to eat more healthy foods. Others have religious or economic reasons or are concerned about animal welfare. “Vegetarian diets are also more sustainable and environmentally sound than diets that rely heavily on meat, poultry and fish,” says NIH nutritionist Dr. Susan Krebs-Smith, who monitors trends in cancer risk factors.
Most people think of vegetarian diets as simply eating plant foods and not eating meat, poultry and fish. “But in fact, there are many different types of vegetarian diets,” Krebs-Smith explains. “Some are more restrictive than others.”
Strict vegetarians, or vegans, eat plant foods and reject all animal products—meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy and sometimes honey. Those who also eat dairy products are called lacto vegetarians. Vegetarians who eat both dairy and eggs are called lacto-ovo vegetarians.
Some vegetarians eat fish but not meat or poultry. They’re called pescatarians (pesce is Italian for fish).
“Then there are the so-called flexitarians, or semi-vegetarians. These are people who eat a mostly vegetarian diet, but they occasionally eat meat,” says Jody Engel, a nutritionist and registered dietitian at NIH. “They might say ‘I’m a vegetarian, but I need to eat my burgers every Sunday.’  People tend to follow their own rules, which is one reason why it’s hard for researchers to study vegetarians. There’s so much variance.”
Despite the different definitions, “there’s tremendous agreement among nutrition experts and health organizations that a more plant-based diet is beneficial, whether you’re a true vegetarian or not,” says Krebs-Smith. “Most Americans don’t eat enough fruit, vegetables, legumes or whole grains. There’s a huge consensus that eating more of these foods would be a good idea for everyone.”
Vegetarian diets tend to have fewer calories, lower levels of saturated fat and cholesterol, and more fiber, potassium and vitamin C than other eating patterns. Vegetarians tend to weigh less than meat-eaters, and to have lower cancer rates. “Evidence also suggests that a vegetarian diet is associated with a lower risk of death from certain heart diseases, and that those who follow a vegetarian diet tend to have lower LDL [“bad”] cholesterol levels,” says Engel.
In some cases, though, it’s unclear if certain health benefits come from plant-based eating or from the healthy lifestyle of most vegetarians. “Vegetarians are generally more physically active and have healthier habits than non-vegetarians. They also typically have a higher socioeconomic status, at least in the United States,” says Krebs-Smith.
To tease out the effects of diet, scientists have to conduct large, carefully controlled studies that account for other factors. One of the world’s largest studies of plant-based diets is now underway at Loma Linda University in California. Cardiologist Dr. Gary Fraser is leading an NIH-funded team of scientists to analyze data on 96,000 Seventh-day Adventists in all 50 states and in Canada. Members of this religious group have unique dietary habits and a generally healthy lifestyle.
Adventists are encouraged to follow a vegetarian diet, but about half the population sometimes eats meat. These variable eating patterns allow scientists to compare a wide range of dietary habits and look for links between diet and disease.
To date, the researchers have found that the closer people are to being vegetarian, the lower their risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome (a condition that raises your risk for heart disease and stroke). “The trend is almost like a stepladder, with the lowest risks for the strict vegetarians, then moving up for the lacto vegetarians and then the pescatarians and then the non-vegetarians,” Fraser explains. Earlier studies found that vegetarian Adventists also tend to live longer than both meat-eating Adventists and non-Adventists. The vegetarians also have less coronary heart disease and lower rates of some cancers.
Because vegetarians by definition don’t eat meat, some people jump to the conclusion that simply cutting meat from your diet will lead to health benefits. “But it’s actually more complicated than that,” says Fraser. “Differences in life expectancy and other health matters might be related to the extra fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes—including soy—that vegetarians tend to eat. You can’t necessarily conclude it’s based on the absence of meat,” he says.
Experts generally agree that vegetarians who eat a wide variety of foods can readily meet all their body’s needs for nutrients. “At any stage of life, you should be able to eat a healthy diet by consuming vegetarian foods. But it does take a little planning,” says Rachel Fisher, a registered dietitian involved in nutrition research at NIH.
Vegetarians need to be sure they take in enough iron, calcium, zinc and vitamin B12. Studies show that most vegetarians do get enough, in part because so many cereals, breads and other foods are fortified with these nutrients. “Vegans in particular need to be certain to get enough vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids,” says Fisher. Omega-3—found in fish, flax seed, walnuts and canola oil—is important for heart health and vision.
Some vegetarians take dietary supplements to make sure they’re getting everything they need. It’s a good idea to talk to a registered dietitian or other health professional if you’re a vegetarian or thinking of becoming one.
Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, Fisher says, you can benefit from the high fiber, low fat and rich nutrients of a vegetarian diet. “Vegetarian foods can be so delicious, and they’re so good for you,” she says.
Try using a variety of spices and herbs to make things interesting. And make sure not to overcook your vegetables, or they might lose some of their valuable nutrients.

One should always keep in mind that weight loss takes time and is not going to happen overnight. It requires a change in eating habits. It doesn't mean that weight loss requires eating less. It means you have to keep an eye on the calories you are taking and how much your physical activity and other works help them to burn.

Weight Loss Tips

[1.] Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. In provides hydration to your body and help you feel full.

[2.] Eat fruits and vegetables rich in fibers, vitamins and antioxidants. They fill up your stomach fast and are also low in calories and help to keep your calorie count low.

[3.] Taking small frequent meals help to balance calorie intake throughout the day, instead of eating 3 big meals, try to eat 5 - 6 smaller meals throughout the day.

[4.] Walk 20-30 minutes daily after your last meal. These will help you to speed your metabolism up before the food has a chance to get settled in and lower your body fat storage.

[5.] Whenever you feel laziness, take several deep breaths and try to do something creative to keep yourself busy.

[6.] When you slip up on your diet or weight loss program, pick yourself back up immediately and make a renewed commitment to your weight loss goals.

[7.] Cardio exercises are the real secret to lose body fat. Cardio Exercises are the only ones proven to burn calories at a sustained rate and hence qualify to be the best Weight Loss Exercises ever.

Secret Weight Loss Tips for the Elderly

IDEAL MEAL : A JOURNEY TO WEIGHT-LOSS

A JOURNEY TO WEIGHT-LOSS

Ham & Swiss Bento (125)

Ham and Swiss Sandwich, Pretz, Yogurt, Red Grapes, Pickles, Mini container of cream cheese for pretzels.

I have been running around a lot lately and have been forgetting my health in my rush to do other things. Does this happen to anyone else?
I found myself getting home late afternoon today and realized that I was starving!!! I mean really hungry, not that cutesy Winnie the Pooh grumbly-in-my-tumbly stuff. Then it hit me – I have not eaten yet and it’s 4:00! Bad, bad!!
So I threw together the quickest meal I could come up with that would offer a good amount of protein and headed out the door again.
This lunch is perfect for travel and I’ll be able to eat most of it while driving (not exactly the best habit but necessary today) without compromising safety.
The sandwich is a small french roll with ham, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and mustard. (I took the insides out of the roll to reduce carbs and calories and make room for extra protein.)
Along with the sandwich I put in some pickle slices that ended up half on the sandwich and half as a munchie. I also have red grapes, butter flavored pretzels with cream cheese for dipping and a sweet-creamy Strawberry Shortcake yogurt.

Spaghetti with meat sauce (124)

Spaghetti with meat sauce, red grapes, butterscotch drop, sesame crackers, almond cookie, brie wedge.sesame crackers,

One can only eat so much of the big birthday cookie without needing a little something else. (No need to worry I had less then half of a wedge of this gargantuan treat!)The only problem is I have limited items in our freezer and little desire to be in the kitchen since I spent so much time in there over the past three days.
Luckily I did have some pre-cooked meat sauce and spaghetti nests in the freezer. So the entree of today’s bento was born. A nice bowl of spaghetti usually begs for grisini but I’m out of that too so I added some crackers and brie as well as a light, buttery almond cookie from a local French bakery. A handful of red grapes finish out today’s ideal meal nicely and it all took less than ten minutes in the kitchen.

The big birthday cookie

My daughter’s birthday was last week and I have to say I can’t believe my BABY is seventeen. She is the youngest of our two children and the last one at home and I am already starting to feel the sadness of her leaving the nest as we plan her senior year of high school and talk about college.
As we were preparing for her birthday I asked her what kind of cake she would like and she said that she decided against a cake this year but just wanted a big cookie instead. Really? No cake? Ok. I guess we can make that work. But I’ve never made a big cookie…
Well, Jessica loves chocolate chip cookies so that’s what she picked and on Friday night while she was out with her friends I made a batch of cookie dough, threw it onto a pan, and baked it up.
This is what we ended up with…

The big birthday cookie! (I forgot to take a picture after I wrote 'Happy Birthday Jessica' and added seventeen candles to the top left corner)
It may be hard to tell from the picture but this really is a big cookie. I mean it is BIG! This is a sixteen inch pizza pan and that thing grew to the edge as it baked but oh it was soooo good.
I was worried I may have overcooked it since it came out a bit darker than usual but I wanted to bake it a little longer so we wouldn’t have a doughy center.
It turned out perfect. The center was nice and soft and the edges had just a little firmness but no crunch. Definitely the way we prefer our cookies.
Jessica actually cut it like a pizza so we ended up with giant cookie wedges that could last each person all day. You could also make this for a party and top it with whipped cream or ice cream and sprinkles or chocolate syrup and let the kids go nuts. Healthy? No way! But such a fun treat :)
If you feel like doing something different for your kids (or yourself) make your favorite batch of cookie dough and bake it on a nicely buttered pizza pan to make this giant family treat.

Tonkatsu & Crab Bento (123)

Top Tier: Spicy crab beggars purse, crab claws, pears drizzled with chocolate. Bottom Tier: Tonkatsu, cabbage, steamed rice, mini container of sweet chili sauce.

Today is a kind of cleanup as far as bento is concerned. I am trying to use up some of the items in the freezer so I took out the last of my egg sheets, imitation crab claws, and boneless pork chops.
The chops were a nice thin cut that lent itself nicely to tonkatsu. Tonkatsu is basically a breaded, fried pork chop which I made by seasoning the chops with salt and pepper, dipping in egg then coating with panko. I fried them in sesame oil till nicely browned and then cooked up some cabbage and rice to go with it.
Finishing out this ideal meal is a beggars purse filled with a spicy crab mixture, a couple of imitation crab claws and some pears drizzled with chocolate sauce. Delicious!!

Tofu and Rice (122)

Instant miso soup, tofu fritters with broccoli, carrots, and rice, and a fruit tier with lychee, strawberry, and kiwi.

My schedule seems to be a little off this week. I normally had been posting in the mornings but lately I have been forgetful and/or running behind in the morning so I have been posting late in the day. I will try to be more consistent though right now I’m not sure whether that means early or late postings will become the norm. I will continue to do my best to post each weekday so all of you “lurkers” can still have something to drool over. :P
Today’s drool is brought to you courtesy of the tofu fritter and miso soup bento.
I love this bento dish because it allows me to make my two-tier bento and still have the bowl lid in which to carry (and later make) an instant soup.
This soup is an instant miso which comes with a flavor packet as well as a seaweed and seasoning packet. I’ve had it a few times and really enjoy the flavor of the broth as well as the convenience.
In the main tier I have some tofu fritters cooked until crispy in a pan with garlic, butter, and pepper. With this I have some steamed broccoli and carrots as well as white rice. All is topped with sesame seeds and bulldog sauce. Yum!!!
For the fruit tier I have a large strawberry as well as a lychee and some kiwi slices.

Hogie Bento (121)

Blueberries, Strawberries, Carrot Chips, Buffalo/Ranch Doritos, Hogie with Salami, Ham & Provolone.

Oh my goodness! I forgot to publish my post this morning. I’m so sorry.
Well, it’s not too exciting but I did actually prepare a bento so here it is in all it’s yumminess. :D
Today’s bento is great for another day of running around. This sandwich box holds quite a bit so I was able to get a good size hogie in here as well as some sides to balance out the meal.
The hogie has genoa salami, black forest ham, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pepperoncini, and italian dressing.
To finish out this ideal meal I added some Buffalo/Ranch Doritos which I picked up at the register to use the last of a gift card the other day. (Have you ever had around $1 left on a gift card? I hate that!)
I also added some blueberries, strawberries, and carrots so it didn’t seem like such an unhealthy lunch.

Crepe Bento (120)

Sweet & Savory Crepes, Cucumbers, Strawberries & Blueberries.

I was a little torn as to what I wanted in today’s lunch so I did what anyone would do…
I opened the refrigerator and stared into the abyss. I then closed the door after finding nothing and repeated this exercise a couple more times.
Now, I’m a mom and I’ve told my children many times that nothing new will appear when doing this but apparently I just didn’t get it today.
Frustrated at my inability to find something wonderful I decided that I would indeed have to cook. Ugh!
Don’t get me wrong – I love to cook. Usually. But it’s miserably hot and I don’t like cooking as much when it’s hot outside. So my goal was to cook something delicious without heating up the house.
This bento is the best of simple stovetop cooking. A couple of eggs, some milk, water, flour, and butter and I have a nice batter for crepes thanks to the genius of Alton Brown. (Recipe here.)
Crepes can take just about anything for a filler so I decided to try two types. A savory and a sweet.
The savory is filled with ham, swiss cheese, and green onions. The sweet has a filling of fresh strawberries, blueberries, and whipped cream. Yum!!
To finish out today’s ideal meal I did add a few slices of cucumber as well as more berries. A nice way to start off the week without having to heat up the kitchen.

Chili Cheese Potato (119)

Upper Tier: Red & Green Grapes, Brie Wedge, Crackers, Little Debbie Petite Yellow Cake. Lower Tier: Chili over Baked Potato.

Why when it’s hot outside do I feel like making chili, soups, and stews? I want these during cold weather because they just warm the belly but when it’s hot I don’t want to do anything that requires use of the oven and heats up my nicely air-conditioned home.
There are a few ways to get by during the summer without heating up the kitchen though.
This weekend many people will be celebrating the great american barbecue and letting dad fill up on his share of beer while leaving grill marks on anything that can take the heat.
I love me a good barbecue but besides the grill I do find myself using another great invention a lot during summer. The crockpot.
My crockpot gets plenty of use for soups, chilis, stews and anything else I can get to cook nicely without a great deal of effort or electricity.
Today’s bento features a great crockpot meal. Chilli con carne. This chili is a combination of ground beef, pinto & kidney beans, tomatoes, green chili, and a variety of seasonings.
Chili is something I make a few different ways and I will serve it on rice, spaghetti, potatoes, inside tortillas, or in a bowl with a variety of toppings.
This chili does have a baked potato hiding under it and is topped with cheddar cheese and green onions. Yum!
To complete this ideal meal I have the last of the grapes as well as some crackers and cheese, and a Little Debbie Petite Yellow cake.
A hearty and delicious meal to finish out the week.
Now crack open a beer and get ready to fire up that grill for this Father’s Day weekend. Happy Father’s Day!

Breakfast Bento (118)

Upper Tier: English Muffin, Red Grapes. Lower Tier: Hash Browns, Over-hard Eggs, Pork Sausage Links.

Sometimes breakfast just sounds good but that is hardly ever first thing in the morning for me. I know it’s the most important meal of the day and helps maintain a healthy weight. Blah, blah, blah…
Sorry. Minor tangent. I really do try to eat something in the morning but my breakfast usually consists of fruit and/or yogurt and coffee. (Yes, I’ll admit that sometimes it’s just coffee.)
Today I wanted breakfast food so I decided to have it for lunch.
This ideal meal has a small portion of hash browns and sausage, one over-hard egg, half of an english muffin and some red grapes. Still a petite meal but enough to keep me going and it allows me to have these breakfast foods without feeling guilty about the calories and carbs.
I’ve tried other breakfast bentos before and am always happy with them. I think my favorite breakfast items for bento would be fritatta or crepes. What’s your favorite breakfast bento?

Meatloaf & Potatoes (117)

Top Tier: Chocolate Pudding, Red Grapes, Vanilla Wafer Cookies, Brie Wedge. Bottom Tier: Meatloaf, Green Beans, Au Gratin Potatoes.

I made a batch of Pastitsio (Greek lasagna) yesterday but since I wasn’t sure of how well it would be received by the family I also made a meatloaf with the remaining ground beef & pork.
I make meatloaf probably every four to six weeks. It’s a favorite with the whole family but I often just make it for sandwiches. This time I made the meatloaf and it went straight to the fridge since the Pastitsio was a hit.
I intended to just slice it up for sandwiches but my husband requested a hot lunch so I made some Au Gratin potatoes and decided it looked good for a bento too.
This bento has the meatloaf and potatoes along with green beans for the main course. To finish off this ideal meal I added a wedge of brie, some red grapes, two vanilla wafer cookies, and some creamy chocolate pudding. Yum!

Effective Stretching Exercises to Increase Height

If you are on a quest to add inches to your height, doing stretching exercises can help you achieve that goal in two ways. The first way is the simplest. Most people have poor posture. They slump their shoulders when they walk and sit hunched over a computer. Good stretching exercises can help improve your posture so you can claim the height you already have.
The second way stretching exercises can help you grow taller is, if done correctly, they will stimulate production of the human growth hormone (HGH) in the body. HGH is what triggers the muscles, bones, and tissues in the body to get bigger. This makes stretching one of the most natural ways to grow taller.

Stretching Exercises for Growth

Forward Bends: This simple exercise decompresses the spin and stretches your neck, hips, hamstrings, and calves. To do this exercise, stand with your legs shoulder width. Slowly bend forward as far as you can without bending your knees. Your hands should be on the back of your legs sliding towards your calves. Hold the position for 20 to 30 seconds and then slowly stand upright again. Do at least 5 repititions.
Hanging: Gravity is hard on the body. In addition to being partly responsible for wrinkles, gravity puts a lot of pressure on the body which results in a compressed spine and joints. One way to alleviate this and stretch out your spine is to hang from a horizontal bar for about a minute. The bar should be high enough so you can fully extend your body. Do this exercise at least 3 times for 20 seconds each. People have reported gaining an inch simply by hanging.
Alternate Leg Kick: This exercise works out your lower back where a lot of people experience stress and pain. To do this stretching exercise, lay on your stomach on the floor. It is probably a good idea to use a mat or towel to lie on. Fully extend one arm with the palm facing down. At the same time, lift the opposite leg up as far as it will go. Hold this position for 20 seconds and then repeat with the other hand and leg. Do at least four sets.
The Cobra: This is a yoga exercise that produces an intense stretch in your spine. Lie face down on the floor and slide your palms under your shoulders. Leading with your chin, slowly push the trunk of your body off the floor. Arch your back as much as possible. Hold the position for 20 to 30 seconds and then slowly lower yourself back to the floor. Do five repetitions.
Pelvic Thrust: When you do this exercise, you will feel the stretch through your entire spine and your hips. Lie on your back with your arms at your side and your feet pulled up as close to your buttocks as possible. Slowly thrust your pelvis upwards towards the ceiling. Hold the pose for 20 to 30 seconds before lowering yourself back to the floor. Do at least 5 repetitions.
As you get used to doing these exercises, increase the number of reps to keep the routine challenging. You can also increase the difficulty by attaching weights to your ankles, wrists, and waist. By no means, though, is exercising the only thing you can do to grow taller. We’ve searched through numerous products to answer the question, “What helps you grow taller?” and only reviewed the products that actually work. Take a look at what we recommend.

Natural Ways to Increase Height and Grow Taller

Today’s society puts a huge importance on height – the taller you are, the more things you get in advantage. But that doesn’t mean that people with smaller stature will always be disadvantageous. If you parents and relatives are short – you don’t need to fret. There are different ways to increase height and grow, and you, too can grow as well.
A lot of people look for ways to grow, and try plenty of artificial methods. However, it may be surprising to know that there are natural methods that actually work. Here are some safe and natural ways to effectively increase your height.
1. Start Early – Some people only wish to increase their height when they realize that they aren’t growing any more. If you want to be tall, it’s advisable to start during your growing years by helping your body grow better.
2. Exercise – Almost all forms of exercise allows the body to release HGH or Human Growth Hormone into the system. This hormone works by triggering the muscles, tissues and bones to increase the size. So, if you exercise, there’s a big chance for HGH to spread into your system and influence growth.
While most exercises allow the body to release HGH, stretching has been discovered to be one of the best methods to growing. Stretching is a good way to exercise since it focuses on the body parts that you want to grow. The biggest areas of your height comes from both your legs and spine, so when you stretch, make sure that you focus on these two areas.
It is essential to incorporate a solid stretching routine along with varied exercises in order to keep yourself healthy. Consistency and perseverance is key, so make sure that you follow your routine on a regular basis.
3. Eat Differently – Do you consume huge meals three times a day? This kind of eating has been found to be not beneficial to attempts at growth. Eating five to six smaller meals during the day instead of the conventional three meals releases human growth hormone better. Just make sure that you eat healthy food as well. Load up on vegetables, fruits, healthy grains and milk.
4. Stop The Drugs – Today’s society has been greatly dependent on syntehtic drugs for treatment methods. Truth be told, antibiotics and other medication can sometimes act as growth inhibitors. It is advisable to live a drug – free life as much as possible. Do not rely on heavy medication for illnesses and conditions unless necessarily so. Remember that prevention is always better than cure, so if you can prevent illnesses from occuring with healthy food and exercises – then you’re preventing the unnecessary use of synthetic drugs, and you’re also preventing drug inhibitors from entering your body.
5. Rest – In today’s fast paced world, people often forget the importance of proper rest. They place more importance on living hard and working hard that they disregard proper rest. If this is your lifestyle, then it is advisable to start putting emphasis on proper rest. Make sure that you get proper sleep daily, and try to relax in between.
6. Try Some Supplements – If you want to help hasten your growth, then you may also want to try some natural supplementation that promise to increase height growth. There are plenty of natural supplements out in the market. It is advisable that you do research thoroughly before using a certain product, since tehre are some products out there that actually do more harm than good. Some products on the other hand are just a waste of money, and do not resutl to anything at all. Make sure that you read up on product reviews before actually deciding to try.
Once you decide to try natural growth supplements, don’t forget to follow the four tips that have been previously mentioned.
Remember that growing is a work in progress, especially when you’ve gone past the normal growing age. It is good to keep in mind that consistency and effort is important. These things may not work immediately, but they will certainly help increase your height in the long run.

The Euro Crisis

For the first time ever, the Danes cut one of their official interest rates to below zero on Thursday.
Struggling against a tide of foreign capital seeking a safe haven, the Danes are trying to keep their exchange rate from rising to the point of throttling domestic industry. Unfortunately, one way or another, the struggle to retain competitiveness is likely to be a forlorn hope.
Denmark’s certificate of deposit rate was chopped by a quarter point to where CDs now yield minus 0.2%. Which is to say holders of these certificates willingly pay the Danish government a fifth of a percentage point for Denmark to hold their money.
True, this isn’t a unique event. But it’s exceedingly rare. Though maybe becoming less so.
Switzerland made aggressive use of negative interest rates during the 1970s, when it was trying desperately to dissuade capital from flooding the country as investors sought a safe haven from the ravages of global inflation and fears of Middle East instability.
Like Denmark, Switzerland is once again struggling against these capital flows, albeit nowadays they’re coming from closer to home.
Market rates on various short-dated Swiss, German and Danish government paper have been negative during the past year. Indeed, what started off as negative rates on the most short-dated bills has been creeping along the yield curve. On Friday morning, yields on the German two-year note, known as the Schatz, dropped to minus 0.01%.
The flip side of these hyper-low yields is high and rising yields across the euro zone’s periphery. Last week’s euro-zone summit helped to calm some market nerves; Spanish and Italian government bonds rallied. But now they’ve started to reverse their gains. Flows are heading from countries where investors fear forced euro-exit to those at the core or which have histories of solid currencies and sound economic policies. Like Germany, Switzerland and Denmark.
So will it work?

The New Hero of Indian Television

On Indian TV, there has never been anything quite like "Truth Alone Prevails." Since its debut in May, the weekly show has reached more than 470 million viewers with its inquiries into issues like pesticides in food, domestic violence and the abortion of female fetuses. Within moments of airing, each episode trends at No. 1 on Twitter in India. Ten million people have sent text messages, emails and comments to the show's website to share their questions, opinions and fears.
In two Indian states, the show has prompted governments to bolster the enforcement of existing laws, and a few weeks ago the show's host was called to testify before a parliamentary committee after an episode on medical malpractice. The scale of the response has made "Satyamev Jayate" (as the show is called in Hindi) more like a people's movement than a television show.
More astonishing is the fact that this social and political phenomenon is the work of Aamir Khan, a superstar of India's giant film industry. At 47, Mr. Khan combines something of the glamour and social concern of George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Like many Bollywood actors, he made his name dancing around trees and singing in the rain, but over the years he has turned to more serious things. Three years ago he had a great success with "3 Idiots," a comedy about the mind-numbing state of Indian education. Now, having turned down offers to do the game shows that many actors of his standing have taken up, he has created something startling and altogether new in India.

The format of "Truth Alone Prevails" is simple. (The show airs on the Star network, which, like The Wall Street Journal, is owned by News Corp.) Mr. Khan introduces the issue of the day to a live studio audience; a short video is shown, featuring a real-world case of hardship or injustice; and then, with only a modest amount of television wizardry, the lights come up and the person from the video is on stage, seated opposite Mr. Khan. And they begin to talk. Mr. Khan does not dazzle the audience with his star power; for the most part, he just listens. It is his guests, often heartbreakingly ordinary, who do the talking.
What emerges from their stories is a creeping horror, a vision of modern India that is stark and deeply unsettling: the family whose mother's life is snatched away, they say, in a botched and unauthorized organ transplant; the 12-year-old girl who accuses a 55-year-old family friend of sexual abuse; the call-center worker who tells of the forced abortion of her female fetuses—six times in eight years—at the hands of her husband's family. Mr. Khan's style is wry and laid back, but occasionally the stories are too much for him, and his eyes well with tears.

Why single women, married men can't mix

Ishani is a 35 year old working woman and has several married men at work asking her out for coffee, inviting her to watch a movie or even offering a "no strings attached" relationship if she is willing to take the offer. There are several other women like Ishani who face these advances from married men not only at work but also outside work. She says, "I had so many male friends earlier who got married. Now it is difficult to maintain the same friendship with them because every time I ask them out for coffee or just sharing a conversation the way they used to before, I have to think twice because her spouse would not appreciate that. Secondly, today men are also wanting a way out from the daily humdrum of life and so seek single womencompanions to share their everyday problems and in the process get involved."

Shashank Rathod, a 40 year old businessman says that it is not always about trying to have a sexual relationship with a single woman. He says, "It never starts off that way. Initially, it's just friendship but then regular meetings and finding solace in each other's company sometimes leads to sex. You watch movies, go out for coffee and take care of each other as friends initially but then the attraction increases and then you end up having a relationship."

Married men are often accused of generally making advances at single women under the excuse that they don't get any emotional support from their wives and when it comes to freedom and enjoying life, it's better done with friends than their wives. Wives are also sometimes aware of this special 'friend' her husband has and generally keeps quiet about it.

Kruti Shah, a sociology professor feels that married men want 'variety' in life and they seek such single women friends because they also want to spice up their bedroom life. They want to experiment sexually and monogamy is something that men don't really understand. She says, "There are married men everywhere looking for opportunity. There are few who will draw a line between friendship and attraction. Also, even if they want you as just a 'friend' they are not willing to go out with you for coffee in public places, only talk on sms, talk late in the night when their wives are asleep, and meet only at home when there is no one around. They can never share a friendship that's normal because most of the time they fear their wives will misunderstand them. So it's no point being friends with a married man."

Mostly, married men are asking their single friends out for dinner or a movie when their wife goes to her mom's place on a holiday or are expecting a baby. This is the time when they are bored at home alone and looking for some adventure with their single women friends. Says Dr Ashish Trivedi, "Single women should be aware of such selfish married men because they are plenty. But having said that there are genuine friendships happening but very few. You generally can't trust a much married man asking you out for coffees and movies regularly without his wife being there."

So then, when it is already difficult for single women to find a social life, she has to cut off from her good male pals also when they get married. Ishani says, "It is sad but it is better to find single men friends then be friends with some married guy who is forever thinking of his wife's reaction to the friendship or wanting to make indecent proposals later."

Mumbai blasts: Forensic labs tested to the limit

MUMBAI: The 13/7 blasts could not have come at a worse time for the state's six forensic science laboratories (FSLs). Not only are they grappling with thousands of pending tests, but also with a staff shortage of more than 35%.

In the face of test samples pouring in from the blast sites, the government has called a meeting with the director, FSL, Maharashtra, to fill up the vacancies promptly. The meeting is scheduled for Friday. The laboratories combined have 315 vacancies out of a sanctioned strength of 892. In Mumbai, the lab in Kalina has a backlog of over 10,000 tests and 95 vacancies out of a sanctioned strength of 317.

The vacancies, unfilled for years, and a dependence on contractual staff have led to samples for viscera (the large organs inside the body, including the heart, stomach, lungs and intestines), DNA and ballistic (bullet and ammunition) tests remaining untouched for months. Some tests, including cyber, speaker identification and polygraph, are pending for over one and a half years. Viscera samples alone account for 11,000 pending tests, 3,000 at the Kalina lab. These samples could hold the key to murder and suicide cases, as could ballistic and fingerprint samples, over 400 of which are awaiting analysis. The count of chemical samples is long lost.

MV Garad, director of the Kalina lab, said: "Cases that require to be dealt with urgently or those of public health importance are handled with extra speed and efficiency. Other cases are taken up on a routine basis."

He said that on Wednesday, after the blasts, teams from the lab visited Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Dadar and collected a few cotton swabs; the reports were submitted to the state home department in a day.

Recently, he said, evidence pertaining to the J Dey murder and the Karjat rave party were examined immediately and the reports handed over to investigating agencies.

About the vacancies, he said 71 chemical analyzers have recently been recruited through the state public service commission and should join work in a month or two; also, the big shortage of class III and IV staffers, who assist the experts, is being looked into. "These posts could take a while to fill as the state has frozen recruitments for a while."

Adding to delays is a perennial shortage of chemicals, said a lab source. "The procurement of chemicals is not smooth, and is often stuck in bureaucratic procedure. It affects the testing of samples, some of which, like DNA samples, pour in at a rate of 10 a day. At times, the delay in getting chemicals stretches to two or three months as the laboratories do not have the authority to make purchases on their own."

FSL purchases are at present under the director general of police.

Mumbai blasts: Opera House debris priceless, kept in 'special locker'

MUMBAI: Boxes filled with earth and silt - part of rubble collected from the Opera House blast site - have been kept in a special locker at the Panchratna building, sources told TOI.

While nearly 60 diamond pieces have been recovered from the site, merchants feel that there could be more hidden in the debris. A Mumbai Diamond Merchants' Association member refused to divulge details for security reasons.

The debris will be checked and the association has hired 10 men to separate the diamonds from the earth and silt. It has been kept under 24x7 surveillance and guards have been deployed.

A diamond merchant said, "A huge crane was used to lift the rubble. Part of it was checked for diamonds, while the rest was packed up." He said the cops have returned pieces of diamonds recovered from the site. The association has kept the pieces in a vault and will wait for brokers who have been injured or family members of the deceased to claim them.

Unclaimed pieces will be auctioned and the money will be used as a relief fund for the Opera House victims, an association member said.
